Military vets higher rate unemployment

Unemployment rate for military vets twice as high as civilian rate

The unemployment rate for military vets is higher than that of the entire US population despite skills gained on active duty; up to 11 %, a full 2 % higher than the general population. Still the congress debates the merit of pay for their service. More than 90 % of our business leader never serves a day in service to our country. It’s no wander that they have no understanding of the skills that vets possess after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. http://www.military.com/veteran-jobs. This is but one of few outlets specifically designs to assist vets after leaving the military. Rep. Jeff Miller, Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, recently introduced complementary legislation to the Veteran Opportunity to Work (VOW) Act of 2011 (H.R. 2433) to help curb rising veteran unemployment. The Tax Credit to Hire Veterans Act of 2011 (H.R. 2443) would provide a tax credit to be applied toward capital equipment purchases to small businesses that hire unemployed veterans. Yet we still find congress up to their old method of balancing the budget on the back of a small minority.  Specifically those who choose to serve our country.

Military Pay Held Hostage – Again

Week of July 18, 2011

The U.S. is about to hit the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling and it appears Congress and the President are no closer to a deal to raise the spending limit. The impact of hitting the debt ceiling is not fully known, but the Department of Treasury says that “If Congress fails to increase the debt limit, the government would have to stop, limit, or delay payments on a broad range of legal obligations, including Social Security and Medicare benefits, military salaries, interest on the national debt, tax refunds, and many other commitments.”

A Few Good Men

The ax has fallen on the fate of Gen. Stanley McChrystal; His insubordination has cost him his job. This is not the first time a general has been called on the carpet by the president. History is full of examples where presidents and generals have clashed.

The most notable examples of history are the famous clashes between Pres. Abraham Lincoln and General George B. McClellan. General McClellan frustrated Pres. Lincoln more and longer than any other general during the Civil War. He was eventually replaced by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. We all know how the story ends.

During world war II President Harry Truman and Gen. MacArthur clashed to the point that he was removed from the Pacific for insubordination. However something appears to be different with this current clash. In the previous examples neither General questioned the legitimacy of the president.

The case involving general McChrystal not only involves him, but also numerous staff under his charge. This situation is particularly egregious which shows total disrespect for the office of the president. In previous clashes between presidents and generals there was a rift because of difference of opinion on military tactics, not politics or personal attacks.

The journalist from Rolling Stone magazine who had traveled with general McChrystal and his staff was appalled at the lack of decorum. In an interview with NPR radio the journalist was asked if general McChrystal was aware that he was on the record and was being taped, the journalists said unequivocally; yes!

As the interview continued with the journalist from Rolling Stone he make constant reference to the lack of respect for the office of president and the candor at which he discussed the Obama administration and key staff members.

General McChrystal’s rogue attitude is nothing new. He has been called on the carpet on at least on two occasions by this president. Going back to his days at West Point he was always pushing the envelope as far as he could. He’s an expert at pushing the envelope up to the point where he could compromise himself. It won’t work this time.

Chris Matthews on hardball is saying pretty much what a lot of people are thinking. This situation is almost surreal in that the total lack of respect and decorum for this president is appalling. It’s unprecedented. Unfortunately, there is a large section of the American population who does not recognize the fact that president Obama is the president. These are the people that will not accept his presidency as legitimate. It appears that Gen. McChrystal maybe one of these people.

Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Dwight Eisenhower did not tolerate insubordination, insolence or disrespect from their generals; history is on their side as having made the right call. President Obama is no different in the final analysis history will be on his side for making the right call.

The New Jim Crow

I first heard of Michelle Alexander while listening to a podcast of Bill Moyer. I was riveted by what she had to say about the new Jim Crow. I was always aware of the disproportionate incarceration rates of young black males. The pathology and statistics she quoted were bone chilling. I was especially disturbed by her research on the complexities of the laws that have been enacted in order to keep black people, particularly black males in their place.

Here are some of the tragic realities she describes. Seventy percent of black males from 18 to 25 are more likely to go to prison than attend college. Drug use between whites and blacks are almost even. However, blacks are 40% and in some cases up to 90% of those incarcerated for similar offenses.

During the Regan era the “Southern Strategy” was formulated to attract poor southern whites who felt animosity and disenfranchised due to integration, busing and affirmative action. These were the same people who were Roosevelt democrats during the “New Deal.” The strategy worked! These were the Regan democrats who swelled the ranks of the Southern Strategy. It worked like a charm!

Alexander Haig was the architect of this strategy. They used code words that would appeal to white’s racial fears and resentment of African Americans. Such phrases as “The war on drugs” the “War on crime. African Americans were targeted in this war. Later in the evolution of this strategy, the three strikes law was passed. The results have devastated the black community.

Ms. Alexander has a grim prediction that will come to pass if this continues. African Americans will systematically be disenfranchised in areas of American life; particularly in the area of the right to vote. If we continue at this rate, blacks will be no better off than we were fresh out of slavery. This has epic consequences.

Her premise is that once you are labeled a felon, you can be legally discriminated against and marginalized in American society. Most southern states banish you for life from voting! You can’t get a job, public housing, food stamps or any other government assistance. The implications are sobering. Most felons are returned to prison within three years of their release because they have no viable options for sustaining any livelihood.

Most of the disenfranchised are inner city blacks and poor whites. Of course, Latino’s are part of this equation as well. All of these dire predictions beg the question; so what do we do about it? Having two sons one in college and the other in high school, I’m very concerned. I say prevention, intervention and mentoring is the answer. We are losing a whole generation of young black men to crime, drugs and high incarceration rates. If we don’t try to stop it, who will?

Retired General Named To Head NASA

President Barack Obama on Saturday named the first African-American to head NASA, the nation’s space agency. 090523_nasa_chief_297

The announcement was designed to coincide with this week’s return of the space shuttle Atlantis, now pushed back to Sunday.

Gen. Charles Bolden is to be administrator of NASA, and Lori Garver is to be deputy administrator of NASA.

“These talented individuals will help put NASA on course to boldly push the boundaries of science, aeronautics and exploration in the 21st century and ensure the long-term vibrancy of America’s space program,” Obama said.

Here are the bios from the White House’s “intention to nominate” announcement:

Gen. Charles Bolden, Nominee for Administrator of NASA
Charles Bolden retired from the United States Marine Corps in 2003 as the commanding general of the Third Marine Aircraft Wing after serving more than 34 years, and is currently CEO of JackandPanther LLC, a privately held military and aerospace consulting firm. Gen. Bolden began his service in U.S. Marine Corps in 1968. He flew more than 100 sorties in Vietnam from 1972-73. In 1980, he was selected as an astronaut by NASA, flying two space shuttle missions as pilot and two missions as commander. Following the Challenger accident in 1986, Gen. Bolden was named the chief of the safety division at the Johnson Space Center, with responsibilities for overseeing the safety efforts in the return-to-flight efforts. He was appointed assistant deputy administrator of NASA headquarters in 1992. He was senior vice president at TechTrans International Inc. from 2003 until 2005. Gen. Bolden holds a B.S. in electrical engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis and a M.S. in systems management from the University of Southern California.

Michelle Obama Supports Military Families

michelle

The following story was submitted by one of our associates.

Supporting military families, she has said, is an issue “close to her heart.”

And on her first solo out-of-town trip as first lady, Michelle Obama yesterday went to Fort Bragg in North Carolina, where soldiers greeted her with cheers. She talked with troops, posed for pictures and gave hugs, according to a pool report, before a private lunch with 20 relatives of service members and five volunteers who help support soldiers and their families.

The visit to Fort Bragg, her office said, is part of her campaign to meet military spouses and learn about support services that are available to military families.

Obama has said that more national attention must be paid to the plight of military families, and she has made their needs one of her signature issues.

Last week at the women’s center at Arlington National Cemetery, Obama said military families have a special strength, noting that military service doesn’t stop with the person wearing the uniform.

“They are mothers and fathers who have lost their beloved children to war,” Obama said. “They are husbands and wives keeping the family on track while their wives and husbands are deployed, on duty. They are grandparents, aunts and uncles, sisters and brothers who are taking care of children while single moms or dads in uniform are away.”

She continued: “See, military families have done their duty, and we as a grateful nation must do ours. We must do everything in our power to honor them by supporting them.”

Support for military families remains a top issue for President Obama as well as the first lady. During the presidential campaign, Michelle Obama often met with families who, she said, “are left behind when our men and women go off to serve.”
